The main purposes in the work is to: 1) Compare black liquor combustion characterization results to recovery boiler experiences. 2) Study the mechanisms of sodium release in black liquor combustion and to 3) further develop the combustion characterization measurement methods. In the first part results from laboratory scale black liquor combustion characterization tests developed at Åbo Akademi University have been compared to experiences of fouling at four finnish kraft recovery boilers.Characterisation results showed good agreement with deposit growth measurements and melting properties of collected deposits. The second part studies the release mechanisms of sodium from black liquor char during combustion.Molten sodiumcarbonate reacts with the char carbon and gaseous elemental sodium is formed.Special interest is the effect of in which form the sodium salt (Na2CO3, Na2SO4, Na2S2O3, Na2S and NaCl) is in the liquor. In the third part the laboratory characterisation methods are further developed. The gaseous combustion products are measured with on-line gas-anlayzers (CO2, CO, SO2 and NO) and the signals are mathematically processed (deconvolution). The different combustion stages (pyrolysis, char combustion and inorganic reactions) are identified in the results.
